Drunken Movie Tweets

Alcohol, Movies, The Internet. What Could Go Wrong?

Atlantis: The Lost Empire or 1920s Pulp Action Isn’t As Easy As All That.

Ah, Atlantis. I saw this in the theater and still have a soft spot for it. Mike Mignola’s designs, the memorable and quirky characters (I admit to a soft spot for Doc Sweet), but it was PG, which is death for an animated feature. Seriously, any animated American movie that goes PG seems to never be heard from again with only a handful of rare exceptions (thank you Brad Bird!)

Though Atlantis went on to some direct-to-DVD action (of which we shall not speak here), the original had a warm place in my heart. Now, it has a warm place with my liquor.

Enjoy!

Jumanji or This Was Done Better in an Episode of Doctor Who, I’m Sure

I was having a day and just watched some really heart-wrenching TV with Avatar: The Last Airbender’s ”Tales of Ba Sing Se.” I decided I needed to have a laugh.

I remembered Jumanji and that it was okay and I thought, why not a Drunk Tweet?

What ensued was perfect fodder. All kinds of actors- Robin Williams, Bebe Neuwerth, Bonnie Hunt, David Alan Grier, Kirsten Dunst; Joe Johnston doing… Something in the director’s chair. It was the perfect remedy to getting stamped in the feels.

Enjoy!

Alien or How the Mighty Have Fallen

Alien was a big change up. I’d been off Drunk Tweets for about a year and wanted to get back into it. So, with Prometheus coming, I opted to do something of a bit more quality (too bad I couldn’t say the same for Prometheus, which I didn’t enjoy).

Just like with Ginger Snaps, this stalled out my drunk brain as I was more inclined to keep saying HOLY SHIT THAT’S AWESOME than make fun with the movie.

After watching Alien, I determined that I had to be way more discerning about the movies I Tweeted. They needed to lack a certain quality or have an air about them that invited my brand of inebriated shenanigans to flourish. I still was able to get some mileage out of it though- I’m no quitter.

Enjoy!

Return to Neverland or Disney Save Me From HORRID CHILDREN

Disney’s remakes and late 2000 retreads turned out to be a good source of fodder for Drunken Movie Tweets. Because I could remember hitting the theater once or twice when I was bored as a teenager (yes, I’m that old) and not having a bad time.

Return to Neverland was especially fun because it was all over the map in quality. Nothing more enticing than a movie that can hold your interest and dismiss it all in the same minute.

Sherlock Holmes or I Swore off Holmes Tweets After This

It seemed like a good idea at the time. I did BBC, let me do the just as fun in a different way American take on the timeless detective. Man, was I tired of Holmes after this. This was still with “Gay of Shadows” barely underway in the Hollyweird machine. On the up-shot this was a return to Drunk Tweet form. We had action, we had wacky acting with Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law, we had Guy Ritchie pointing out that London was really gross in Victoriana. In other words: plenty of material.

The downside is this would burn me out on Holmes for a bit. Between BBC and this I was just… Blarrgh, no more Holmes. I needed a breather. Not that the internet gave me one, but a girl can dream, eh?

Enjoy!

Ginger Snaps or I Thought I Was Getting Lesbian Werewolves

More experimentation as I found what made for a good Drunk Tweetable film. I had only vaguely heard of Ginger Snaps and the impression I got is there were silly, lesbian werewolves involved. I like lesbians, I like werewolves, this could be good. After seeing it though, I wondered how lesbian werewolves became an impression at all with regards to Ginger Snaps.

Like MST3K, I learned that the movies had to be seen first to ensure maximum snark. Even an uneven movie can grab your attention, and when you’re drunk bad movies get +10 to their Watch Me ability. Still. It was a good experiment and I got a weird-ass movie with some seriously disturbing quality out of it.

Enjoy!

Treasure Planet or How To Be a Space Pirate Without Really Trying

With the notion that what I’m watching shouldn’t be too good, I flipped through a five-dollar bin and found Treasure Planet. I remember seeing it in theaters (yes, I’m that old) and thinking it okay and remembering the Johnny Rzeznik song a whole lot better. Ultimately, I’d be revising my opinion by the end, making this film one quite close to my heart now.

This would also mark the first time I’d get drunk during a movie and change the lead character’s gender and sex in my head to make it more appealing to me. Somehow Jane Hawkins as a moody, coming-of-age lesbian in the space world was more entertaining, so for better or worse, it happened.

BBC’s Sherlock or What Happens When You Combine Typography and Homoerotic Subtext

Second time out, I wanted something a bit different. Sleepy Hollow was a decent movie, but Tim Burton has always been a bit dodgy when it came to script and story so I had wiggle room to snark.

BBC’s Sherlock was a tightly written thing, so I wanted to see if I could still find inebriated humor even when everything was working in my favor. I certainly found a new tone, but trying to find the balance between what made a movie too good to be drunk tweeted and just plain enjoyed is something I’m still working out.

Hell of a way to experiment though, eh?

Enjoy!

Sleepy Hollow or Headless Walken Will Scare The Shit Out Of You

First up, Sleepy Hollow. Though technically, my first pass at this was Back to The Future II, my friends didn’t appreciate the tweetspam, so I made a separate account just for when I’d snark on whatever was in my DVD case.

I would like to point out that getting smashed while watching these does not make me a better critic/reviewer person, it just makes me forget what I’m watching and “yell” at the movie that much more honestly.

Enjoy!
